SWEDEN
School of Design & Crafts (HDK)
The School of Design and Crafts is usually called HDK, an abbreviation of the Swedish name. At HDK you’ll find educational university programmes at bachelor and masters level which are unique in the Nordic countries: our multidisciplinary Design programmes are the only ones of their kind. You’ll find few equivalents to our Programmes in Applied Arts, where the personal specialisation within Jewellery Art and Design, Textile Art and Ceramic Art are the platform for mutual discussions. With our Teacher’s Training Programme we actively contribute to the development of Visual Arts. We are also a part of Sweden’s only Research School within a Faculty of Fine, Applied and Performing Arts.
The characteristic HDK student is curious, has artistic talent and the courage to question. At HDK the students are encouraged to combine creativity with responsibility, the will to conquer professional skills and to combine them with social engagement. They are also given the chance to deepen their knowledge and at the same time get an understanding of complex entireties.
At HDK future designers, craftsmen, artists and teachers in visual arts gather in the same building as doctoral students. In the city centre of Gothenburg, neighbour with Sweden’s only Museum for Design and Crafts and a stone’s throw from the main street. HDK is 160 years old and is a part of the University of Gothenburg.
School of Photography and Film, HFF
The School is part of The Faculty of Fine, Applied and Performing Arts, the largest Fine Arts Faculty in Scandinavia. We produce and mediate Photography and knowledge on Photography.
The School covers the whole range of education and research, from Degree Course over Master’s Degree to PhD students. We favour free, individual creativity, and a critical attitude. Most courses are chosen by the student.
The School is relatively well equipped with for instance scanners, computers, professional processing machines, large format Epson printers.
At HDK STENEBY you find artistic programmes with focus on design and crafts, a holism that effects and confirms an identity based on tradition and innovation. As a student you will obtain a solid knowledge of materials and design as a basis for your future creative profession and coming commissions.
Konstfack is unique among Swedish art schools in offering arts, craft, design and teacher training.
Konstfack has many well-equipped workshops, studios and computer rooms and a well developed service for exchange students/teachers. Most teachers work part-time at Konstfack and develop their own artistic career along with their teaching, which enables students to benefit from their close links with contemporary arts, crafts and design.
Lund University, Industrial Design Education – LTH
The 3 + 2 year programme in Industrial Design commences by concentrating on the essentials such as aesthetic skills and creative tools, complemented by a sound technical and theoretical background.
Design methodology, which lies at the core of the design process, is then introduced through the use of projects, and is supplemented by human factors such as ergonomics, psychology and universal design; issues that continue validating the explicit potential of our university context. Design management know-how further complements increasingly advanced and long-term design projects that include tuition in materials applications and 3D modelling.
Comprehension and practice of the fundamentals in design are reinforced, culminating in a complex project that focuses on sustainability and ethics, as well as technology and manufacturing. We encourage students to apply their knowledge in internships abroad, verifying and adapting their individual approach to develop insights and understanding of different cultures. The programme concludes with preparatory studies – in some cases in conjunction with international institutions or companies – for the degree project, a final in-depth study merging and confirming all creative and analytical competences.
