The Faculty of design, at Oslo National Academy of the Arts is a fairly new institution in a school that will soon be two centuries old.

The design environment today is closely linked to craftsmanship and tradition while the education is embedded in the Bauhaus modernist methodology. Today, design is part of the much larger creative enterprise, taking part in the transformation of society from the one of things and objects to one of experiences. Simultaneously the faculty is going through great structural changes while there is a strong desire among the teachers to not loose the link to the specific Norwegian myth, materials and method. Society, the professions and not least the students want to develop competences that enable them to be global actors while building on local sources for inspiration.

The faculty educates designers through three-year bachelor degree courses in Interior Architecture and Furniture Design, Fashion Design and Costume Design, and Visual Communication. The faculty also runs a single masters’ degree course in which students can specialize in the subjects of Interior Architecture and Furniture Design, Fashion Design and Costume Design, and Visual Communication of various kinds.

Strengths: Tradition, craftsmanship, materiality and method while transforming to becoming a global actor in the experience economy focused on quality of life.

Oslo School of Architecture and Design / AHO

aho1

The Oslo School of Architecture and Design (AHO) is an autonomous specialized university college within the Norwegian university system.

AHO provides the following master’s degree programs:

Master of Architecture (5,5 years)
Master of Industrial design (5 years)
Master of Landscape architecture (2 years)

The education, research and project development at AHO is centered on design and reflections on design through critique, history and theoretical developments. At AHO, one works with design on all scales; objects, buildings, city and landscape design. The educational programs at AHO are professional educations. Organizing the studies in studios and focusing on working on projects are significant hallmarks. The architectural education at AHO is based on an academic model where drawing board education and learning theoretical disciplines through working on larger projects are central elements. The industrial design education has to a larger extent been divided into subjects, following a polytechnic model.

Undergraduate studies
The master of architecture and master of industrial design programs have a similar structure. There is no bachelor degree, but the 3 first years of study are regarded as the “foundation level“ that all students must pass in order to move further to their master courses. The foundation level provides the students with basic knowledge within architectual and design history and theory, as well as basic crafts as drawing model building, mathematics and ICT.

Graduate studies
From the 7th semesther onwards students may select their own choice of courses from the curriculum offered each term. All students select one studio course of 24 ECTS credits and one theory course of 6 ECTS credits each semester. In their last semester, students work with their diploma assignment, which must be passed in order to receive a degree.

Postgraduate/PhD
In addition the school offers selected experience based master programs within Urbanism and Architectual Heritage. AHO has educated PhD-students since 1981 and has currently around 40 PhD students enrolled in both teaching and research.
