LATVIA
The Art Academy of Latvia (the AAL) was founded in 1921. The major task of the Art Academy of Latvia is to provide art education and to facilitate creative work in Latvia as well as in the international context, thus securing art continuity. The basis for studies at the Art Academy of Latvia is formed by a modernized tradition of academic education, which outlines that art studies can be academic in its essence, that is, one can do academic research and there are specific methodological parameters that distinguish it from interest studies. The AAL has approximately 650 students.
The Art Academy of Latvia offers the following study programs:
Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor’s degree program in art;
Master of Arts, Master’s degree program in art;
Doctor of Arts.
The studies in the Art Academy of Latvia are organized in five faculties: Art, Visual Plastic Art, Design, Audio-Visual Media Art and History and Theory of Art.
The Art Faculty focuses on profound studies in two-dimension art forms. Within the framework of these studies students can specialize in painting, graphics, drawing and textile art.
The Faculty of Visual Plastic Art provides in-depth studies in three-dimension art forms. Within the framework of these studies students can specialize in sculpture, ceramics, glass art and fashion design.
The Design Faculty focuses on profound studies in design in all expressions of its multilateral forms. Within the framework of these studies students can specialize in functional design, metal design and environment art.
The Faculty of Audio-Visual Media Art focuses on profound studies in the issues of interaction of new media, space and time. Within the framework of these study areas students can specialize in visual communications and scenography.
The Faculty of History and Theory of Art and Theory of Culture provides in-depth studies in various issues of the history and theory of art and the theory of culture. Within the framework of these study areas students can specialize in the history and theory of art and restoration.
