History of Cirrus

Cirrus is an old network, established in 1990 by some of the old design and art schools in the Nordic countries. The network represents institutions that include all the fields of design, media, art and innovation. Today there are partner institutions in all the Nordic and Baltic countries. The institutions offer education for BA, MA and doctoral studies. The institutions also take part in manyВ  other diverse activities: innovation, services, technical development and philosophy. Many of the institutions offer possibilities for research and post doctoral work, and professional development within higher education. The institutions work with social and community issues while business and industry is becoming an ever larger factor. Cooperation within that field has increased during the last years and we presume it will grow further in the near future.

Cirrus has also been active in developingВ  design and innovation policies within the respective countries and recently has also engaged in research for a common Nordic-Baltic design and innovation policy, where all partners can gain an understanding for the common qualities within the region while looking out for the specific local traditions and specialties.

During the last decade the Cirrus network has developed a close collaboration with the partner institutions in the Baltic through the Erasmus network and on other premises. This collaboration has been fruitful for the enlargement of the Nordic area and now the partner institutions will be full members of Cirrus. The Saint Petersburg area in Russia is also a potential strategic partner for the future. Collaboration has been with them through the Cumulus organization with common conferences, design exhibitions, workshops and research supported by the Council of Ministers.

Cirrus has applied for funding thorough the Nabo program to extend its collaboration with Poland and Russia.
